Although San Diego isn’t currently experiencing significant rainfall, the city encourages homeowners and renters to prepare for potential flooding. Flooding can cause extensive property damage, with just an inch of floodwater potentially resulting in up to $25,000 in costs, according to FEMA. The city stresses the importance of planning ahead to mitigate these risks.
To help residents, San Diego is offering a 15% discount on national flood insurance policies through FEMA’s Community Rating System. This program makes it more affordable for property owners and renters to secure separate flood insurance policies, which are required to cover flood-related losses. “Flooding can happen when you least expect it. This discount ensures residents can protect their homes and families,” said Todd Snyder, director of the city’s stormwater department.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for AlertSanDiego to receive emergency notifications during disasters. With over 14,000 acres in San Diego designated as high flood risk, preparation is crucial. The city’s stormwater department has distributed emergency preparedness brochures to floodplain residents and will deploy storm patrol crews during heavy rain to address issues like downed trees and temporary flooding.
